22 Jun Youdance 2017
In June, Year 13 Dance students performed at Youdance 2017 which took place at Epsom Girls Grammar. Youdance is a showcase of dance pieces from schools around Auckland over a two night show.
The Year 13 Dance class performed their piece ‘To Stay’ which was created in a class collaboration process alongside their teacher. The piece is based on the ideas and themes of NZ women being left behind to run the country while the men went off to war. The inspiration for the piece was Neil Ieremia’s work ‘Passchendaele’ which was created for the WW1 centenary tribute in 2015 for the Royal New Zealand Ballet. The students will also be performing the piece in the upcoming Dance Showcase on Sat 2nd and Mon 3rd July in Pakuranga College Hall.
This is what the audience had to say about the students’ performance:
“You have drawn us into your world and understand your relationship with each other and the audience.”
“Beautiful performance with clearly understood and executed thematically driven movement.”
“Focused and expressive dancers who worked well together.”
The students had a great time and, as well as performing in the show, they also spent the morning at the ASB Theatre in the Viaduct watching two pieces from ‘Three by Ekman’ by the Royal New Zealand Ballet.
