This year Pakuranga College had four courageous Pasifika students enter the ASB Polyfest Speech Competition. Students were given a list of topics and from there, constructed and memorised a speech fully in their Pasifika language.

Joey Breed (Year 9) spoke on the Samoan stage last Wednesday and was accompanied by a group of eager Junior students.

On Thursday 21 March Sharrita Fuapau-Manase (Year 12) and Talaoloa Fretton (Year 13) delivered speeches on the Samoan stage. We were also blessed to have our first Tongan student Suli Fangupo (Year 13) present a speech on the Tongan stage. Our Pasifika Leaders and some encouraging Senior students took signs on the day to cheer on the speech-givers.

Our time was a memorable one. The stalls exhibiting opportunities for Pasifika and the delicious island food were chief amongst the many highlights.

Special congratulations also goes to Joey Breed whose speech speaking on the role of family on our language, culture and identity placed 2nd in the Year 9 category.
