Mrs Collier Joins the Air Force for a Week

16 Feb Mrs Collier Joins the Air Force for a Week

The School to Skies teachers camp 2023 edition happened at the Royal New Zealand Air Force base in Whenuapai, during January. Mrs Collier attended the residential camp for six days, where she tried her hand at some of the trades the Air Force and Navy have to offer school leavers and students.

Activities included metal work, welding, planning a search and rescue mission, working on a helicopter engine, building parts of an aircraft, using non-destructive testing technologies, drill exercises, and team problem-solving challenges. She met Dr Michelle Dickinson, also known as Nanogirl, spent a day at the naval base in Devonport, and flew in a Hercules over the Hauraki Gulf, seeing Bucklands Beach from the open end of the aircraft!

Both the Air Force and Navy have an exciting variety of career opportunities and study support in the form of scholarships and internships. Plus, students get paid a salary while learning!

The Air Force and Navy are also hosting Wahine Camps during the April school holidays, where students can experience a week in the military. The Air Force camp is for Year 13 female students studying Mathematics and Science. The closing date for applications is 20 February. Click here to apply. The Navy camp is for Year 12 and 13 female students studying Mathematics and Science. The closing date for applications is 24 February. Click here to apply.
