New Zealanders love getting out into nature with a trip to the beach or a walk in the bush, and sport is always a favourite. As an international student, if you’re asked to take part in one of these Kiwi pastimes, get into it – you won’t regret it!

Backyard Cricket

Backyard cricket, or BYC, isn’t only played in the backyard at home. Head to the beach or local park in Auckland with your homestay family and they’ll show you how to play – you’ll be hitting 6s before long! Don’t forget to shout “Howzat!” when someone is bowled out, it’s the most important (if unofficial) rule of the game!

Rugby

It’s true that when the All Blacks lose, New Zealand mourns. We are a nation of rugby fanatics and we’re pretty good players too.  If you want to give rugby a go, you can sign up for a team at Pakuranga College. Our coaches will show you the basics, including how to tackle, so you can get on the paddock (field) and earn your Kiwi stripes while studying here.

If you’re after something a bit less physical, we also have Touch Rugby or Rugby League on offer too.

A Day at the Beach

Nothing beats a day at the beach and luckily we have plenty in Auckland for your to enjoy, including Eastern Beach just a short drive from the college.

Our beaches are close to their natural state, so don’t expect food stalls and sun loungers. Anything you want for the day, you’ll have to bring. We recommend a beach towel, beach umbrella, sunscreen, drinks and snacks, plus a good book or music. Come dressed in your togs (swimwear), jandals (flip flops), with sunglasses and a hat.

Remember that the sun in New Zealand is harsh and you’ll need lots of protection to avoid a sun burn. The best way is to slip, slop, slap and wrap:

Slip
Slip on a shirt and slip into some shade.

Slop
Slop on some sunscreen. Don’t forget to reapply every two hours and after swimming and make sure it’s at least SPF30 and broad-spectrum. Ask your host family if you aren’t sure, every Kiwi knows about sun protection!

Slap
Slap a hat on your head.

Wrap
Wear your sunglasses.

A Tramp in the Bush

New Zealand has some beautiful pristine bush, even in a city like Auckland. Wander amongst our native trees and birdlife on a hot summer day to escape the heat. In East Auckland you can explore the Point View Bush Path, or head to the Waitakere Range in the west of the city for the best bushwalking in Auckland. Be sure to take a phone, snacks and water, and let someone know where you are going.

Barbequing

Barbeques are a way of life in the summer – steak, sausages, chicken – if it’s a meat it will go on the barbie. The best way to eat a barbeque is outside and with lots of tomato sauce!

Cooking on the barbeque is relaxed and very social, the whole family will hang out together. Pay attention and get some pointers – you might be trusted with the tongs, if you can prove you won’t overcook the steak!
