On Monday, 15 June, the Pakūranga College Choir performed at the Big Sing! The Big Sing is a nationwide secondary school choral competition that, each year, involves more than 190 schools and 9,000 students. This year, Pakūranga was lucky enough to take part in the festivities, and perform three songs: a classical, a cultural, and a contemporary number.
These were: Dona Nobis Pacem, a beautiful anti-war round composed by Ralph Vaughan Williams in 1936; Hine e Hine, a lullaby about a Māori princess, specially arranged by our very own choir teacher, Ms Trudy Lile; and Bright Lights / Big City, a modern pop acapella mash-up from the 2012 movie Pitch Perfect.
Moreover, it was Pakūranga’s very first time performing at the Big Sing, with a small choir of just twenty-one people, formed only a handful of years beforehand.
Fourteen choirs performed that Monday, and our choir was able to attend the whole day, watching and learning and most certainly enjoying what the other schools had to perform. Overall, every student agreed the performance went well and were buzzing to come back and smash out the competition next year.
