Two groups of students recently chose to spend their Saturday tackling real-world problems through critical thinking and teamwork. Eight students participated in the New Zealand Engineering Science Competition, which involved extensive research and mathematical modelling.
Over the course of eight hours, they worked to solve a challenging, open-ended question: “If New Zealand built gravity batteries near wind farms, how much energy could be stored during a period of strong wind?”
Their task was to investigate the problem and produce a comprehensive report. Laptops were humming, equations and ideas covered the whiteboards, and collaboration was in full swing as they tested theories and refined their models.
After an intense and rewarding day, we are incredibly proud of their dedication and problem-solving skills. Results from the competition will be announced later this term.
