In the first week of Term 3, the Howick Local Board visited our Senior student leaders to discuss the draft Howick Local Board Plan 2026 (Te mahere ā-rohe o Howick 2026), as part of their interest in the opinions of the area’s youth!
Bruce Kendall, the Howick Local Board Chairperson, along with the 11 other Howick Local Board members, presented 2026’s draft Howick Local Board Plan.
The Howick Local Board Plan outlines the future goals and aspirations of the community for the next three years, with a focus on five different areas of improvement: Community, Natural Environment, Built Environment, Economic Development, and Transport.
The opinions of youth in the community are greatly valued in informing the local board about the priorities that rangatahi believe should be focused on. This helps with aligning the interests of the wider community with the resources put into programmes, events, and facilities found in the Pakūranga, Howick, Botany, Flat Bush, and East Tamaki areas.
Our student leaders voted on which areas they thought should be prioritised by placing stickers onto boards with various prompts. It was an effective way to visually see which areas students thought were most important, with more stickers meaning more votes!
The Howick Local Board members were around to answer any questions students had about the draft Howick Local Board Plan. Hearing about what happens behind the scenes at a local level to support the community and address emerging challenges was a very insightful and interesting experience for our student leaders.
