Last week, we had a group of young athletes compete in the South Eastern Zone Athletics competition, with some astounding results:

Maeve Makes Waves at Open Water Champs

Year 9 Nīkau Whānau student, Maeve McDonnell, recently competed in the NZ Secondary Schools Harlequins Open Water Championships, swum as part of the Banana Boat Open Water Series Harbour Crossing event.

Maeve came 1st in the Girls 12 and 13 Long Course (2.6km) event in both competitions. She also placed as the 3rd female overall for the Harbour Crossing event and 2nd female overall for the NZSS Harlequins competition. Congratulations Maeve!

Next weekend she will be swimming at the national NZ Secondary Schools Open Water Championships at Blue Lake, Rotorua. Best of luck to you Maeve!

Leah Breaks Auckland Record at Mt Smart

Year 9 Pōhutukawa student, Leah Marais, ran in the Junior Auckland Championship Mile (1600m) race on 2 March at Mt Smart Stadium and set a new Auckland resident record in the Girls’ 13 grade with a time of 5 minutes and 10.14 seconds! She smashed the previous record of 5 minutes and 27.97 seconds, set in 2014! Congratulations Leah, here’s to many more records broken!

Success at TAG

What a Friday! Our Boys’ and Girls’ Tag teams gave it their all at the College Sport Senior Tag South Eastern Zone One Day Tournament on February 23. The girls secured 3rd place in their division, while the boys finished with 8th place in the middle of their division rankings. Thank you to our amazing coaches, Emma and Matthew Diamond, both Pakuranga College alumni!
