In June 2026, an annual competition was held at Sacred Heart College, to find the winners of the Year 9 Readers Cup. 11 teams participated in the competition, where they had to read a random set of six books and memorise small details that others may miss. Teams could bring five students to the event, but only four students were allowed to compete at any given time.
The students then had to answer eight questions per book, and earn points if they were correct. The competition challenges students to read between the lines, and get an in-depth understanding of each book. This year, the 2026 team included Finlay Norton, Tadhg Nevin, Micah Jeffery, Ava Heart, and Mila Hawkins. The team answered tough questions and worked together, resulting in a fifth equal finish with Macleans College.
A special thank you to Summar Austin-Collins and Alison Fistonich for organising the Pakūranga College team, and helping us get to the competition. Well done readers!
