Term 4 of 2025 was a laid-back time for many students at Pakūranga College; clubs and councils were wrapping up, homework was becoming less and less, and school itself was coming to an end. But for 13 Juniors – one with a vision, and a teacher – one who would soon be in need of many cups of coffee, things were just getting started. Pakūranga College’s 2025 Junior Production, The Dahlia Cabin, (directed by Sofia Talbot De Silva) was a sellout success, reflecting the tireless work and effort of our cast, director, producer (Cossar Salesa-Lee), and our supervising teacher (Mr Waters).

The Dahlia Cabin was a jukebox musical featuring tracks from Ride the Cyclone, Waitress and Chicago, revolving around a violent storm that leaves six teens trapped within the confines of a summer camp cabin. While stuck, one of the camp counselors, Ruby, starts an icebreaker that leads the group into an exhilarating ride of friendship, connection and self-discovery.

“Behind the scenes, we had an absolutely incredible time. Before joining, I had worried that rehearsals would be stressful especially since we only had one term to practise but I was pleasantly surprised with how organised everyone was and how smooth it all went.

“We had some hiccups along the way, but we always came back a thousand times better. We all worked incredibly hard together, especially all of the amazing people who performed solos and dances, and we made the production feel like it was professional – as if it was on Broadway!

“By the end of our show night I don’t think any of us wanted it to be over, we all had so much fun and made such good connections and memories along the way.”

Lily Mai, cast member of The Dahlia Cabin

“The cast of last year’s Junior Production felt like less of a cast and more like one big (and sometimes dysfunctional) family! It was a pleasure to work with so many supportive, talented and kind-hearted individuals – all of whom put their very best foot forward on the night of the show. It was a big commitment for all of us. But the presence of our amazing director Sofia, and the friends we made along the way, (yes, I’m using that old cliche!) ensured that we always turned up to rehearsals with smiles on our faces.

“To the cast, Cossar, Mr Waters and especially Sofia, thank you so much for all the hard work you put in! None of this would have been possible without you guys!”
