Ice Hockey

Nīkau brothers Jett and Casey Chung recently represented Auckland at the U16 Ice Hockey Nationals. Both showed outstanding leadership in their roles as assistant captains, helping their team to a 9-1 win-loss record in the regular season and a podium finish at nationals – 3rd!

The boys also received special awards at the end of the tournament. Casey was awarded team MVP, and Jett was awarded the best defenseman of the tournament.

Taekwondo

Over the holidays, Kevin Edwards from Kauri Whānau represented New Zealand in the ITF World Cup in Spain! Kevin competed in a stacked Junior 15-17 year old division against taekwondo athletes from all over the world, as well as dealing with 34-degree temperatures in the humid stadium.

Kevin showed excellent skills in his Sparring, but unfortunately just missed out on the medal rounds. In the Specialty division against 96 competitors, Kevin flew through the first rounds with an exceptional flying side kick. He cleared 2.6m, which wasn’t quite enough to advance into the final rounds, but still earned 10th position!

Kevin also spent some of the competition coaching and assisting some of his teammates when he wasn’t competing himself.

Swimming

Over the holidays, Mataī student Travis Henderson competed in the 2026 New Zealand Short Course Swimming Championships with HPK Racing. This super swimmer claimed some excellent results in the 15-year-old age group – ka pai!

A huge congratulations to Lottie Currell from Pōhutukawa Whānau on her selection for the 2026 China Pony Club International Exchange! Lottie will be representing New Zealand alongside three other riders in Suzhou and Shanghai from 28 October to 9 November. The exchange combines competition, riding, cultural exchange, and sightseeing.

This is an incredible opportunity – we wish you all the best, Lottie!

Hockey

Paki paki to Jesse Elliott, Lande Ludidi, and Kaylin Jacobsohn, who competed at hockey nationals earlier this month!

Kaylin Jacobsohn represented Auckland U16A at the U16 Girls National Tournament, where the team claimed the top spot, winning all their games. They beat Canterbury 3-0 in their final to win the national title.

A massive congratulations to Sienna Anitele’a and her team, who made it to the grand final, finishing in 2nd place!

A special mention to Aaliyah who was nominated by her team to compete in the Hot-Minute final. In this part of the competition, the shooter who scored the most 3-point shots in a minute would be crowned the winner, and that winner was Aaliyah!
