When we meet prospective students and their families, a common question we are asked is whether Pakūranga College is a public or private school. Did you know that in New Zealand, only 4% of schools are private? This compares to 16% in Australia and 7.5% in Canada. We are, of course, a public school located in Auckland’s leafy Eastern Suburbs.

Choosing the right school is a pivotal decision for international students embarking on their educational journey in New Zealand and Pakūranga College is an ideal choice. Here’s why:

1. We offer the same NCEA curriculum as private schools at a fraction of the cost.

If your child plans to study the New Zealand NCEA curriculum, then you’ll get fantastic value at a public school like Pakūranga College. The NCEA curriculum is set by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority and all schools that offer NCEA teach a standardised programme to prepare students for national exams at the end of each academic year.

We have many years of experience delivering an engaging and diverse NCEA curriculum. Students at the college consistently outperform the national average for NCEA, with the majority of our students continuing on to university study. In 2024, an impressive 93% of international students who sat NCEA Level 3 successfully earned their qualification and University Entrance.

2. We offer a broader curriculum of NCEA subjects, allowing for specialisation or diversity.

Pakūranga College’s size allows us to offer over 40 different subject options, making it easy for students to find courses that fit their strengths, passions, and aspirations.

For students attending Pakūranga College to practise their English or experience the Kiwi lifestyle, our hands-on subjects are a great option. Our Outdoor Education course is extremely popular, as are Hospitality and our Arts subjects – Dance, Drama, Music, Painting, Photography and Design.

If your child is academically driven and is clear about their future career path, they may benefit from a specialised approach to subject selection, focusing on a particular area of the curriculum. And if your child is not sure what they want to do in the future, our board curriculum can let them experience subjects as diverse as Classical Studies, Robotics, Earth and Space Science, and Economics.

Our Careers Department works with our students one-on-one to help them select subjects that are appropriate and ensure they will have the right level of credits to gain NCEA.

To support our broad curriculum, we have superb facilities. Media Studies students enjoy a state-of-the-art editing suite and Food Technology students take their classes in a commercial kitchen. Our Dance and Drama classes have bespoke rehearsal spaces tailored to their needs, and our Technology suites are equipped with high-spec computers, 3D printers, laser cutters, robotics labs, and engineering workshops.

Our sports amenities are also extensive, with a heated pool, indoor basketball courts, flood-lit hockey turf, football and rugby fields, and even a weights training room all on site.
