Leaving your country to study in New Zealand is a big moment. To ease your mind, we cover how to travel to New Zealand and what you need to know before you go.

  1. Visa Requirements

Before you pack your bags and board that plane, you’ll need to obtain the appropriate visa. New Zealand offers several types of student visas, but the one you’ll need is:

  • Student Visa (Fee-Paying): This is the most common visa for full-time international students. It allows you to study in New Zealand for the duration of your study.

Remember to apply for your visa well in advance of your intended start date. You’ll need to provide evidence of your acceptance at a New Zealand institution, proof of sufficient funds to support yourself, and a valid passport.

  1. Health and Travel Insurance

Health and travel insurance are vital when travelling and to attend Pakuranga College you will need to provide evidence of both. While New Zealand offers excellent healthcare, having insurance ensures you’re covered for unexpected medical expenses.

  1. Return Flights

To enter New Zealand you will need to provide evidence of a flight back to your home country at the end of your visa period. Booking a one-way flight may result in entry being denied, so ensure you book a return flight. Lots of our students book flexi-fares so they can change their return date if necessary.

  1. Banking and Finances

Opening a New Zealand bank account will make managing your finances much easier during your stay. Ask your homestay family to take you to their local bank after your arrival. You will need to bring your passport, visa, and proof of address to open an account.

  1. Packing Essentials

New Zealand’s weather can be a little unpredictable at times, so pack a variety of clothing for summer and winter. Items that can be layered for warmth are always a good option. And don’t forget power plug adapters, as New Zealand uses Type I sockets.

Studying in New Zealand is an opportunity of a lifetime and if you’re accepted to study at Pakuranga College our helpful staff in the International Department will be in contact with you to ensure that you have everything you need to make your study in New Zealand a success.

Embrace the adventure, savour every moment, and make your international student experience in Auckland truly unforgettable!
