UN Youth members Hugo Orin, Tirbwhan Singh, and Harriet Schmidt were our Pakūranga College delegates at Rotary MUNA 2024 hosted by Rosmini College at the end of May, representing Jamaica. Here’s what they learned through the experience:
“We need to fight for women because equality is not a privilege but a right.”
Participating in MUNA has been one of the most enjoyable and transformative experiences I’ve had this year. I’ve learnt more about global issues, public speaking, and effective communication because of MUNA. One of the remits this year was for countries to confirm their commitment to the equality of women. Representing Jamaica, we strongly agreed with this remit. MUNA made me feel inspired and hopeful as it showed me that through collective effort and understanding we can make the world a better place.

“We, as a country, believe “with climate change, we must change”, we are doing our job to create a more sustainable future for the generations to come.”
During MUNA, I was lucky enough to learn from the amazing people there. I learned more about the processes and rules of how the UN is run, I learned that if I want something to happen, then I have to fight for it. Finally, I learned how amazing and smart the youth in Auckland are.

“The fight for gender equality is not only about justice, but our collective futures.”
MUNA was a really unique experience, with formal debate laughter. The issues are very eye-opening and show the different perspectives people can have on a shared problem, but also the fact that we can come together to overcome them.
