Fringe Festival Tap
Emily Cooper of Mataī recently performed in Tap Fusion, a high-energy, percussive tap dance production that opened the 2026 New Zealand Fringe Festival at the Hannah Playhouse in Wellington. The show fused tap with street dance styles and live original music, exploring the concept of communicating through rhythm and movement. Inspired by productions such as Tap Dogs and STOMP, this innovative performance pushed the creative boundaries of tap dance and showcased exceptional musicality and collaboration.
Both Fringe Festival performances were completely sold out, with outstanding audience reviews. Emily was proud to be part of such a groundbreaking production, representing youth talent in a professional festival setting and contributing to a show that made history at the Wellington Fringe. Her dedication, stage presence, and commitment to her craft continue to open exciting opportunities at the highest level.

Hip-Hop Group
The hip-hop team explores a wide variety of hip-hop styles, giving members the opportunity to grow as versatile and confident dancers. Through regular training, the group focuses on strengthening foundational skills, improving performance quality, and developing musicality.
We aim to build strong connections within the team by creating a supportive and inclusive environment where everyone feels motivated to push themselves. As well as developing technique and teamwork, we are working towards training and preparing for Blueprint, using it as a goal to challenge ourselves and perform at our best.
Thank you to the massive group of students who audition for the team, we have an awesome squad for 2026! We are now training hard as we gear towards Dance Showcase and Blueprint.

Dance Academy
Dance Academy is focused on developing dancers’ technical ability and performance quality through dedicated training in jazz, contemporary, and lyrical. The programme aims to strengthen core skills, improve control, flexibility, and musicality, and support dancers in reaching a higher level of technique.
In a focused and positive environment, dancers are encouraged to challenge themselves, refine their movement, and grow in confidence and artistry. Dance Academy provides opportunities to upskill, build discipline, and deepen understanding of these styles while working towards personal and group excellence. These skills will be shown at the 2026 Dance Showcase!
