08 Nov Young Enterprise Students Win Prize for the Unitec Te Awa Award
Pakuranga College students, Rishad and Kelvin, received the $200 Prezzy Card Prize for the Unitec Te Awa Award from Blair Sorensen (Student Recruitment and Relationship Manager)and Anaru from Unitec Pathways College.
Both Blair and Anaru were impressed with the creative use and upcycling of old bicycle parts to create useful household objects that were both functional and also well designed.
Rishad spoke of how the idea for upcycling bicycle parts came when his brother was about to dispose of his old bicycle and he wondered if there was any way he could reuse the parts. His group came up with a few ideas before they selected their flagship products (clocks and bottle openers). The bottle opener was a creative way to get maximum use out of the leftover bicycle parts and generate more value added from their resources.
They are planning to continue selling their products through their website after their NCEA examinations and have a few (top secret) ideas of other products they could develop next.
