12 Feb USA Basketball Tour
On December 5th our Boys’ and Girls’ 1st basketball teams departed to the United Sates to take part in the Cabrillo High School Winter Classic Tournament . Outside of this and other games, the students had some down time and were able to visit some sites and places of interest. The students visited Griffiths Observatory and also saw some of Hollywood. They went on to Santa Monica Pier and visited the shopping malls in the area.
They were also lucky enough to attend an NCAA basketball game. This gave the students an idea of university level basketball in the US and knowing that these players would go on to play in the NBA was an eye opener. Another highlight in Los Angeles was going to the Staples Centre to watch the LA Lakers play live. It was particularly special for the students to watch superstars like Lebron James in action. No trip to Los Angeles would be complete without a visit to Universal Studios Theme Park and the day was enjoyed by students and staff.
We then travelled on to San Francisco, where we were lucky enough to tour and train at the Olympic Club, which is the oldest sports club in the US. The group also took a ferry to Alcatraz Island and did a historical tour of the prison. This was also a highlight of the tour.
The last stop was Santa Barbara, where we visited the amazing beaches and shopping malls, before heading back to LA for our departure.
The trip was successful on all fronts and the students represented Pakuranga College admirably and with pride.

TOURNAMENT IN LOS ANGELES
Boys won the Cabrillo High School Winter Classic
We beat 3 teams in pool play and then beat a team in the final. We went undefeated in this tournament
Girls Lost 2 and won 1 in pool play at the Cabrillo High School Winter Classic
Girls lost their first 2 games, and did amazingly to come back and win their last game at Orange Coast College.
GAME IN SAN FRANCISCO
Boys beat Bay School of San Francisco by 15
Boys dominated early and weathered a half time come back from the Bay School Breakers (their team name). Noa Latu and Ryzmin Tuifao leading all scorers.
Girls beat Bay School of San Francisco by 2
Some clutch play from Seniors Marama Downes and Sayandra Anderson, winning the game in the dying moments with some pressure free throws made. We were down a lot during this game and the girls clawed back for the win.
An awesome post game meal of Mexican food with the teams and their families and staff was a great way to top the night. We all exchanged pas times from our home countries and they suggested some cool places to visit and eat.
GAME IN SANTA BARBARA
Boys Lose to Dos Pueblos High School
Boys only loss came in their last game vs a very tough Dos Pueblos HS. Dos Pueblos are one of the top teams in the Santa Barbara area, so it was a great way to test our level. Our boys fought hard but had to play catch up most of the game.
Girls win vs Bishop Diego High School
Girls pulled out a massive win vs Bishop Diego HS. A very talented and well drilled opposition, who put pressure on us early and ran out to a double digit lead. This didn’t phase our girls however, and they rallied back with great defence and ball movement on offense to stage a come back win in the dying stages of the game. Great resilience shown and total team effort from all 10 girls.
We shared some pizza post game with Dos Pueblos, and played some “Kiwi” party games (Pukana, Slaps), and even had a sign off from one of the Dos Pueblos boys and our very own Sarah Tran. A great night and tour overall on court and off it!
