08 May Students Set Sail
During Term 1, as part of a leadership unit, our Year 13 PEO classes spent two days sailing on the Lion NZ. This is a yacht formerly skippered by Sir Peter Blake in the Round the World yacht race and is now under the ownership of the NZ Sailing Trust.
The students learned how to sail the boat, including how to tack and jive and deal with the ever changing flat and then windy conditions, as well as sleeping in the bunks and helping to cook meals. We stopped off at some of the inner islands in the Hauraki Gulf, including Rakino Island and Mototapu Island.
It was an invaluable experience and the students had a great time. We would like to say a huge thank you to the NZ Maritime Foundation who provided a large amount of funding that enabled this trip to take place.
