Social Enterprise Project

14 Dec Social Enterprise Project

As part of the Social Enterprise Project, Junior students were asked to identify what they considered to be an area for improvement at Pakuranga College and come up with an innovative way to resolve this issue.

Principal, Michael Williams, was then asked to judge the entries. Originally, the winning team was to receive $300 towards making this idea a reality. However, Mr Williams was so impressed by the great work done by the students, that he has chosen seven concepts to be implemented next year.

Here are some of the ideas the students came up with:

  • Homeless care packages
  • School green house
  • Nets for the basketball hoops
  • More benches around the school
  • Improved PE shorts design
  • Murals and art around the school
  • Shortening tuckshop lines
  • Google map of the college
  • School social media app
  • Reflection room to replace detentions
  • Placing solar panels on new gym
  • Planting of native trees around new gym
  • Community garden
  • Painting benches with Maori designs
  • Grey water system for shower water
  • Filter system for stream
  • Wishing wall for goals and suggestions
  • Change changing rooms by mini gym to swimmers only
  • Career Expo
  • Stationery supply
  • Additional bins and outdoor tables
  • Garden to attract bees
  • Additional water fountains

Those projects that have been selected for implementation next year are:

  • Improvements to toilets, including toilet monitors
  • Decorate benches with Maori designs
  • Murals and art around the college
  • Installation of more water fountains
  • Installation of more outdoor seating
  • Outdoor tables with bin incorporated
  • Planting of native trees around the new gymnasium

In addition, a number of groups have been paired up with existing student councils and college departments to explore the possibility of developing their idea further.
