Social Enterprise Project 2017

07 Dec Social Enterprise Project 2017

As part of the Social Enterprise Project, Junior students were asked to identify what they considered to be an area for improvement at Pakuranga College and come up with an innovative and cost effective way to resolve a problem faced by their community (the school).

Principal, Michael Williams, was asked to judge the entries. Mr Williams was so impressed by the great work done by the students and the scope of the ideas, that he has chosen more then one concept to be further worked up and implemented next year.

Here are some of the ideas the students came up with:

  • Wall art to represent each house
  • School ID cards that act as an AT Bus Pass & electronic payment card
  • Fruit tree garden to promote environmental well being and good health
  • Improve student appreciation of tuckshop area by having tables decorated in house colours
  • Sanitary vending machines in bathrooms
  • Serenity garden – a quiet area for students
  • Movable wooden bench outside the new gym
  • Learning habits murals
  • School map on student centre “You are here”
  • School wide app to connect students with teachers
  •  New school drinking fountains
  • Tuck shop menu on the parents portal
  • Vinyl wrap to the green rubbish bins, wrap theme to be voted on by the students
  • Renovate/redesign the block signs
  • App for students to discreetly report bullying incidents

Those projects that have been selected for implementation next year are:

  • Wall art that represents each house
  • Tuck shop tables to be painted house colours
  • Wooden bench outside the new gym that can be used for seating during school breaks or events
  • School map “You are here”  outside the student centre
  • Toilet maintenance app for students to alert staff when toilets need repair
  • Map and review school drinking fountains for repair and improvements

In addition, a number of groups will be paired up with existing student councils and college departments to explore the possibility of developing their idea further.
