26 Oct Ryan Wins Regional Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Champs

Year 11 Pakuranga College student Ryan Medcalf won the regional Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu championships at the ASB stadium in Auckland recently.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art, combat sport system that focuses on grappling and especially ground fighting.

Ryan’s whose currently also an assistant instructor at Buckland’s Beach BJJ, is going to continue his training and look to win the national championships next year before moving onto international competitions.

He has been training for around seven years and continues to train around six hours a week developing his skills. The biggest challenge was competing in a new country. Ryan was an established competitor in the UK and overcame the pressure he put on himself.

Ryan’s father Andy says, “Pakuranga College has been great for Ryan’s confidence and maturity. He has been fortunate enough to meet with other students who enjoy sports and activities as much as he does.”

This is an amazing achievement and we look forward to seeing Ryan achieve his dreams to win the national championships in 2018.
