18 Jun Our Community of Learning
Pakuranga College belongs to a formal Community of Learning (cluster) with Farm Cove Intermediate, Wakaaranga School, Sunnyhills School and Elm Park School.
Science has been one of the focus areas in the first two terms of this year. This has seen Farm Cove Intermediate and Pakuranga College ensuring that students are well supported with learning in Science, and especially the transition at Year 8. Together we are looking at developing processes that will support all students to be successful in Science, with a focus on building students’ curiosity of the world around them and their understanding of it by developing their ability to ‘Think like a Scientist and Talk like a Scientist’.
A number of very productive professional development sessions have been run between the two schools, consisting of what strengths each staff brings within their contexts, and how to enhance learning through engaging tasks; developing student understanding of the science capabilities and learning dispositions; and exposing students to different strands in Science in meaningful ways. A considerable amount of time and resource has been put into this area, and it is wonderful to see the two schools work so productively together.
Our goal is to work collaboratively on a number of focus areas in order to improve the educational outcomes of the students in our community, from when they begin their formal schooling in a Primary setting, to when they transition from College to employment or further education.
