Students in years 9 and 10 will be taking part in the annual Pakuranga College Discovery Days.

Today’s schools need to be educating for lifelong learning. To thrive in the 21st century students must achieve at the highest level in NCEA examinations and have learnt how to be: Curious and creative, imaginative and critical, self-disciplined and self-aware, collaborative and resilient.

Discovery Days are about encouraging our junior students to cultivate the habits and skills that enable them to be leaders within their community.

This year we once again want the students to focus particularly on participating and contributing.  How can they identify a need within a community and create a project that fulfils that need.

Tutor groups have been paired together and they have spent the last few months preparing a Discovery Days project that will in some way benefit others.  This year the 42 projects include:  Water safety lessons for a local primary school; fundraising for Starship hospital; high tea with entertainment at a retirement village and cleaning up local beaches and streams.

Students will be attending school at the normal times 8:40-3:00pm in uniform, unless a particular project requires students to leave the site or wear different attire. If this is the case, then parents will have received a letter from their child’s tutor teacher.
