Economics Trip to Wellington

06 Jul Economics Trip to Wellington

It was a great opportunity to fly to Wellington for our Year 12 Economics Trip (Sunday 25th June – Tuesday 27th June).

This trip is structured around our internal assessment to analyse how government policies and contemporary economic issues interact. We are focusing on Government policies aimed at how controlling the rapid increase in house prices and expanding supply of houses may have unintended effects on other government policy objectives.

Each place we visited helped us answer questions we wanted to ask, which gave us a better understanding for our internal and it also opened our minds to the New Zealand economy and the effects of Government policy. Presenters from each place we visited also talked about their tertiary backgrounds, including internships which many of them had taken up. They encouraged us all to consider going into those types of jobs in the future.

After arriving in Wellington we went to the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa. On Monday we visited the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, ANZ Bank Trading Room, Stats NZ, Victoria University and we also went out to the movies and dinner that night.

On Tuesday we visited the Treasury, which was interesting as we got into groups and made our own Budget and had to prioritise our decision making with a limited amount of money. We also went to The Reserve Bank of New Zealand and Parliament.

The visit to Parliament was really enjoyed by everyone, as some students caught up with a number of politicians, including Speaker of the House of Representatives, The Right Honourable David Carter. We even saw Labour Party Leader, Andrew Little walking around Wellington a few times during our trip. Newly-elected Labour Party MP for Mt Roskill and former Pakuranga student, Michael Wood, was our welcoming Member of Parliament during our tour and he talked about life and Parliamentary proceedings before we sat in the public gallery to watch Question Time. Our local MP The Honourable Maurice Williamson even waved to us up in the gallery!

Thank You to Mr Brian Peel, Mrs Christine Mishra, Mr Tom Lyall and Ms Victoria Cobden-Grainge for their organisation and guidance of our trip.
