2023 House Captains Announced

04 May 2023 House Captains Announced

Meet our new House Captains! Read below to discover their plans for 2023.

Kauri
Tracy Huang

What are your plans as House Captain in 2023?
My leadership style focuses mainly on collaboration, and I am excited to collaborate with other leaders to establish a welcoming and positive environment within Kauri House. Through my own experiences, I have noticed the importance of role models and how much influence those around you have on how you act and think. This is why I want to use my position as your House Captain to set an example for Pakuranga College students.

How did it feel to be named House Captain?
I felt proud and honoured. Now, I feel delighted as I can express my true leadership capabilities in a role that demands this.

What makes your House so special?
To me, Kauri House is a big family where everyone treats one another with respect and kindness, and I’ll do everything in my power to make sure that this continues and that the supportive friendships keep getting stronger. I’m super excited to see what we as a team accomplish this year.

Mataī
Jaden Morton

What are your plans as House Captain in 2023?
My plan as House Captain in 2023 is to continue the legacy of love and connection that Mataī  House has, by ensuring that the House Leader team and myself are setting good examples to follow.

How did it feel to be named House Captain?
I felt very honoured to be named House Captain. I’m ready to step up and lead my House to the best of my ability.

What makes your House so special?
Mataī  House is very special as we not only give it our all in House competitions, but ensure that everyone is having a good time. Making sure there is fun, laughter, and friendships being built is key.

Nīkau
Aaminah Ali

What are your plans as House Captain in 2023?
As House Captain I’d love to motivate students and make our Nīkau team even stronger. I’d also love to set a good example for younger students and show them that everyone has a leader within them.

How did it feel to be named House Captain?
I was honoured and proud to be named Nīkau’s House Captain, but it was also a bit of a shock.

What makes your House so special?
I think what makes Nīkau so special was perfectly said by one of our teachers. They said, “Win or lose, we do it in style” and I agree. We have fun no matter what and I’d love to keep that attitude going. Even though it’d be great to push ourselves to Top 3, being a fun, caring and inclusive House is just as important.

Pōhutukawa
Ashleigh van Gemst

What are your plans as House Captain in 2023?
My plan for this year is to create a supportive, welcoming environment where all students feel like they belong. I hope to show students that school is a really valuable place to discover your interests and grow as a person, which all comes through participation and involvement.

How did it feel to be named House Captain?
When I found out I was a House Captain I felt grateful for the amazing opportunity to be a role model for students. I look forward to connecting with those around me and growing in my role.

What makes your House so special?
Being a part of Pōhutukawa gives you a sense of pride and belonging, it is a place where everyone is accepted and is encouraged to be the best they can be. This is shown through our awesome (and by far the loudest) House chant and emphasises that we are more than a House, we are a whānau.

Rimu
Bianca de Leon

What are your plans as House Captain in 2023?
My plan as the 2023 Rimu House Captain is to make sure everyone makes the most out of the year. I encourage everyone to seize all the wonderful opportunities that come their way and I want to see everyone excel in the things that they want to pursue. I hope to see Rimu students become a better version of themselves by the end of the year. I promise to use my role to better not only my House but also the overall school environment.

How did it feel to be named House Captain?
It was an unexpected but very gratifying surprise. My younger self never would have thought that I would be in this position. It felt kind of unreal at first, however, it was also validating because it felt like my hard work throughout the years had paid off. I am so thankful to my Deans, teachers, and fellow students for giving me this opportunity.

What makes your House so special?
We celebrate our wins, accept our losses, and keep striving for the best, both as a team and as individuals. We give our all and persevere in whatever we do, but we also never forget to have fun. In Rimu House, we recognise each other’s strengths and use them to uplift one another. Rather than allowing our differences to divide us, we use them to bring us closer together. We are all unique pieces of a puzzle that creates a beautiful picture when put together.

Tōtara
Kendall Oliver

What are your plans as House Captain in 2023?
My goal for this year is to organise lots of different inter-Tutor activities, that everybody can get involved in to have some fun during Tutor Time.

How did it feel to be named House Captain?
I was quite surprised to be chosen, but feel privileged and really proud to be representing Tōtara as the House Captain this year.

What makes your House so special?
I think that what makes Tōtara House special is how diverse we all are in terms of our interests, yet we can still band together to achieve a common goal like during the House Arts Challenge for example.

Congratulations to you all – we wish you the best for your captaincies!
