HOD: Mr B Payne
Level 1 Product Design Technology (11PDT)
A design and construction course providing the basis for level 2 and 3 achievement standards courses for students
who enjoy or are considering professional design careers and university.
| Number |
Name of standard | Literacy/Numeracy | Credits |
Assessment |
| AS91044 | Undertake brief development to address a need or opportunity | L | 4 | Internal |
| AS91045 | Use planning tools to guide the technological development of an outcome or address a brief | 4 | Internal | |
| AS91046 | Use design ideas to produce a conceptual design for an outcome to address a brief | 6 | Internal | |
| AS91047 | Select resources to develop a prototype | 6 | External | |
| AS91049 | Demonstrate understanding of how technological modelling supports decision-making | L | 4 | External |
You will learn to:
• work safely in a workshop environment
• use and handle tools in the correct manner
• develop projects through undergoing technological practices
• use machinery and resources available safely and in the correct manner
Course cost: $40 This will cover the materials cost of most of the projects undertaken as part of the course,
however, any extra materials needed for complex or large artefacts produced for clients as a part of the evidence
for assessment may need to be purchased separately
Level 2 Product Design Technology (12PDT)

Name of standard | Credits |
Assessment |
| Techn 2.1 | Undertake brief development to address an issue | 4 | Internal |
| Techn 2.2 | Select and use planning tools to manage the development of an outcome | 4 |
Internal |
| Techn 2.3 | Develop a conceptual design for an outcome | 6 | Internal |
| Techn 2.4 | Undertake effective development to make and trial a prototype | 6 | Internal |
| Techn 2.6 | Demonstrate understanding of the role of material evaluation in product development | 4 |
External |
You will learn to:
• identify problems from a given context and produce technological solutions
• extend your range of practical skills
• research and examine alternative solutions to the problems addressed
• critically evaluate your own work
Prerequisites: successfully completed the level 1 materials technology course with at least 10 credits or having
completed a materials course completing the achievement standard offered

Due to changes currently being made to level 2 standards by NZQA, there may be some minor changes to this
course in 2012.
Level 3 Product Design Technology (13PDT)
The study of technology at this level is not materials specific, students interested in engineering, furniture or
carpentry, electronic or electronic systems can take this course and develop their personal learning goals within this
subject option.
