HOD: Mrs M Hoeberigs
Level 1 Human Biology (11BIO)
| Number |
Name of standard | Literacy/Numeracy | Credits |
Assessment |
| AS90948 | Demonstrate understanding of biological ideas relating to genetic variation | L | 4 | External |
| AS90949 | Investigate life processes and environmental factors that affect them | 4 | Internal | |
| AS90950 | Investigate biological ideas relating to interactions between humans and microorganisms | 4 | Internal | |
| AS90925 | Carry out a practical investigation in a biological context | N | 4 | Internal |
| AS90929 | Demonstrate understanding of biological ideas relating to a mammal as a consumer | L | 3 | External |
You will learn to:
• describe DNA and how genetic information is transferred
• explain how humans are affected by their lifestyle choices and organ malfunctions
• investigate the life processes of micro-organisms and how they affect humans
• carry out a practical investigation into an aspect of digestion
• describe the structure and function of the human digestive, skeletal and muscular systems
Course cost: work book costing approximately $20
Students may not do 11BIO and 11SCI or 10 SCX because there is significant overlap of standards. 11BIO may be
used as a prerequisite for 12BIO.
Level 2 Biology (12BIO)
| Number |
Name of standard | Credits |
Assessment |
| ASBIO2.1 | Carry out a practical investigation in a biology context, with supervision | 4 | Internal |
| ASBIO2.3 | Demonstrate understanding of adaptation of plants or animals to their way of life | 3 |
Internal |
| ASBIO2.4 | Demonstrate understanding of life processes at the cellular level | 4 |
External |
| ASBIO2.5 | Demonstrate understanding of genetic variation and change | 4 |
External |
| ASBIO2.8 | Investigate biological material at the microscopic level | 3 |
Internal |
You will learn to:
• study organisms at the cellular level and at organ system level
• study the source of genetic variation and change in organisms
• use a microscope to investigate biological material
Prerequisites: Students must have gained a minimum of 12 science or biology achievement standard credits at level 1, including AS90948 or AS90929 or at the discretion of the head of department.
Course cost: work book costing approximately $40
Due to changes currently being made to level 2 standards by NZQA, there may be some minor changes to this course in 2012.
Level 3 Biology (13BIO)
| Number |
Name of standard | Credits |
Assessment |
| AS90713 | Carry out a practical investigation into an aspect of an organisms ecological niche with guidance | 4 | Internal |
| AS90714 | Research a contemporary biological issue | 3 | Internal |
| AS90716 | Describe animal behaviour and plant responses in relation to environmental factors | 4 | External |
| AS90717 | Describe processes and patterns of evolution | 3 | External |
| AS90718 | Describe applications of biotechnological techniques | 3 | Internal |
| AS90719 | Describe trends in human evolution | 3 | External |
You will learn to:
• study the organism at the genetic level as well as aspects of animal behaviour and plant responses to the environment
• study patterns and processes of evolution as well as trends in human evolution
• complete internal assessments which include individual animal studies and research into biotechnology
Prerequisites: students must have gained at least achieved in two external achievement standards in level 2
biology (AS90459, AS90461, AS90462 or AS90464) or at the discretion of the head of department
Course cost: work book costing approximately $40. There may be a trip to the Liggins Institute at Auckland
University costing approximately $20
