Te Reo Māori

Te Reo Māori is the foundation language of New Zealand, the ancestral language of the tangata whenua and one of
the tāonga guaranteed protection under the Treaty of Waitangi. It also provides this country with a unique language
identity in the rest of the world. (Te Taura Whiri).


Year 9 Te Reo Māori (9MAO) One Semester

Students learn and recite karakia. They also learn how to pronounce Māori words correctly, identify Māori key
words, learn about their family tree, research their family history (iwi, hapu, awa, waka) and communicate about
school, subjects, sport and school friends. Students will also gain a great deal of cultural knowledge as they visit a
marae and go to the museum. They will focus on the Māori story of creation and the deities involved and protocol
on the marae.

Year 10 Te Reo Māori (10MAF) Two Semesters

Students intending to study Māori in more depth in the future should choose this course. Students will research
their family history in depth, speak about members of their whānau and what they do, communicate about home,
school and its environment and their likes and dislikes at school. They will learn to follow directions. Students will
also learn to perform a stick game, haka, waiata ā ringa or waiata poi, learn waiata, write and illustrate a simple story
and get more familiar with the marae and marae protocol. They will also be studying the meaning of Matariki (The
Māori New Year), doing a research topic on Māori Arts and Craft while being involved in activities on a marae and
making Te Reo Māori resources for kohanga reo and Puna Reo.

Year 10 Te Reo Māori (10MAO) One Semester

This course is intended for students who do not intend to carry on the study of Māori in the senior school. Students
will research their family history, speak about members of their whānau and what they do, communicate about
home, school and its environment and their likes and dislikes at school. They will learn to follow directions. Students
will also learn to perform a stick game, haka, waiata ā ringa or waiata poi, learn waiata, write and illustrate a simple
story and get more familiar with the marae and marae protocol.

Prerequisites: 12 credits in Te Reo Māori at level 1 or at the discretion of the head of department
Course cost: the required stationery includes Te Pukakai work book (approximately $30)
Due to changes currently being made to level 2 standards by NZQA, there may be some minor changes to this
course in 2012.

• use resources to produce an original and creative piece of writing from a wide range of topics, such as compose a song

Prerequisites: 14 credits at level 2 in Te Reo Māori or at the discretion of the head of department
Course cost: the required stationery includes Te Awa Rere work book (approximately $40)


Beyond Secondary School:
Te Reo Māori will enhance students’ lives in the workplace and at home as it is not just an academic subject but
also a way of life and students have learnt life skills that will keep them in good stead no matter where they go and
what they do in Aotearoa and elsewhere. Many vocations and career pathways that students pursue will welcome
people who are bilingual and are bicultural in things Māori and English, health, teaching, law, hospitality, tourism
and business are just a few areas where Te Reo me ona tikanga will be appreciated.
