Year 9 Japanese (9JAP) One Semester
You will learn to:
• understand and use familiar expressions and everyday vocabulary and interact in supported situations e.g. have a
conversation or write short sentences, using hiragana and some kanji
• receive and produce information e.g. give personal details, talk about yourself, school and likes and dislikes,
demonstrate knowledge of everyday life in Japanese schools
• produce and respond to questions and requests
• show social awareness when interacting with others
Course cost: the year 9 Japanese Mirai work book will be required as part of stationery (approximately $30)
Year 10 Japanese (10JAP) Full Year
You will learn to:
• understand and construct simple texts using your knowledge of the target language
• understand and produce information and ideas. e.g. create short passages in hiragana, katakana, and some kanji, as appropriate
• describe aspects of own background and immediate environment
• express and respond to personal needs and interests
• use cultural knowledge to communicate appropriately
• communicate about your family, friends and pets, clothing and occupations, plans for the future and the weather
• express your opinions, giving reasons and use conditional sentences
Course cost: the year 10 Japanese Mirai work book will be required as part of stationery (approximate $30)
It is also recommended that students purchase their own subscription to the on-line resource Language Perfect (cost $15)

Entry Guidelines: a full year of Japanese at year 10 is strongly recommended for entry to level 1 or at the discretion
of the head of faculty

• explore the views of others, developing and sharing personal perspectives
• engage in sustained interaction and produce extended text
Prerequisites: a minimum of 14 credits in Japanese at level 1. All four competencies (i.e. listening, reading, speaking and writing) need to be represented in the 14 credits or at the discretion of the head of faculty.
Course cost: the year 12 Japanese Wakatta work book will be required as part of stationery (approximate $40)
It is also recommended that students purchase their own subscription to the on-line resource Language Perfect (cost $15)
Due to changes currently being made to level 2 standards by NZQA, there may be some minor changes to this course in 2012.

At this level most classes are conducted entirely in Japanese
