Year 9 German (9GER) One Semester
You will learn to:
• understand and use familiar expressions and everyday vocabulary
• and interact in supported situations e.g. have a conversation in German or introduce yourself in an e-mail
• receive and produce information
• produce and respond to questions and requests
• show social awareness when interacting with others
• communicate about yourself, your family, hobbies and interests, pets and school, likes and dislikes
• express opinions using familiar language and use fixed expressions about time, date, seasons and weather
• understand German culture, festivals, food and music
Course cost: $10 approx. The year 9 German work book will be required as part of stationery.
Year 10 German (10GER) Full Year
The focus is on survival skills as a tourist in Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Europe.

You will learn to:

• describe aspects of your own background and immediate environment

• use cultural knowledge to communicate appropriately
• communicate in different contexts – e.g. going shopping, ordering something to eat or drink, asking for directions, making bookings, finding accommodation and using public transport
• express your opinions, giving reasons and use conditional sentences
This 10GER course allows for the assessment of up to ten level 1 listening and reading credits.

Due to changes currently being made to level 2 standards by NZQA, there may be some minor changes to this course in 2012.

• use and identify the language features and cultural meaning in texts, understanding most of what you hear and read on a variety of topics
• interpret and respond critically to texts
• communicate information, ideas, and opinions through increasingly complex and varied texts
• explore the views of others, developing and sharing personal perspectives
• engage in sustained interaction and produce extended text
The contexts for developing these skills include fashion, relationships with family and friends, fairytales and legends,
travel, music and film, and festivals in Germany. At this level, classes are conducted in German as much as possible.
Prerequisites: a minimum of 14 credits in German (9 or more from productive skills) at level 1 or at the discretion
of the head of faculty
