Education does not stop with secondary school. There are many times, places and levels to enter tertiary
education in New Zealand. Not everyone needs to stay at school until the end of year 13. There are good
opportunities available to students any time after the end of year 11 or age 16 (the minimum legal age for
leaving compulsory education), if leaving school is appropriate.
Students can move on to workplaces, private providers, polytechnics, wananga or universities where they
can do youth training, foundation courses, introductory courses, apprenticeships, certificates, diplomas
and degrees.
To meet the requirements to study at degree level, students must first achieve all the elements of
University Entrance.

Most universities now require a rank score between 120 and 240 points. The rank score is based on an
individual’s best 80 credits at level 3 or higher over a maximum of five approved subjects and a maximum
of 24 credits per subject.
Any credits at ‘Excellence’ will be multiplied by 4
Any credits at ‘Merit’ will be multiplied by 3
Any credits at ‘Achieved’ will be multiplied by 2
The highest rank score a student can achieve is 320
Please remember: Gaining level 3 does not necessarily mean a student has University Entrance and
having University Entrance does not guarantee entry into any degree. Students should strive to do the
best they can to have the best chance to gain entry to their preferred courses.
We also recommend students seek advice from the Careers and Transition Department.
