From the Principal
We are now well into school work for the term. The Year 9 students and the senior peer support leaders are back safe and sound from camps and have settled back into the routine of school. All parents of year 9 students should have received a personal phone call from their child’s tutor inviting them to the year 9 parent evening on March 9th in the school hall starting at 7.00pm. I would strongly urge you to attend, the fact that you have come into school and chatted with your child’s tutor and dean does have a significant impact. It sends a clear message that the teaching staff and you are working together to ensure successful outcome at school. The term is always a very busy one with many additional co-curricular activities scheduled. This week alone we have had students involved in the Auckland Secondary Schools’ Athletics. (Congratulations to all involved - see report below); the Counties Manukau Teams Championships and on Thursday we had our girls’ swimming sports. Next week we have the boys’ swimming sports and the athletics day is scheduled for 18th March. I have been delighted with the level of participation and the excellent performance we have seen. Uniform: It is an appropriate time to remind parents about the uniform requirements. On the whole the students are very well dressed and are a credit to the school and their families. However there are the usual small things that can cause problems; they include plain studs (one per ear), skirts below the knee, no t-shirts to be worn with shirts. Make-up - we do permit light makeup to be worn as it is protective in the sun and it has positive effects on self esteem and pride. We do however draw the line when it becomes over the top and well outside acceptable or respectful standards. We make these decisions on a case by case basis. Brightly coloured nail varnish is not permitted with uniforms. It is also worth reminding parents that we have not changed the rule around cell phones and iPods etc. They are not to be used at school.
